Frequently asked
questions
Here's everything you need to know about the trip that will improve the lives of Guatemalans who need your care, and change your life forever.
A trip is usually one to two weeks long including one day of travel in each direction. Volunteers will stay within Guatemala City and travel out to the clinic each day. The first one to two days will likely be reserved for orientation, planning and set-up, leaving four to ten days for scheduled patient visits and care.
what qualifications do I need?
While this project is in its early stages, the Wasson Foundation is looking for medical professionals with qualifications in dentistry, diabetic care, optometry, or prenatal care. Along with professional qualifications, participants will be recruited for their ability to work in a new environment and to help design a successful visit in their area of expertise.
What is expected of me in the clinic?
Our trips are designed to be shorter in order to make helping the people of Guatemala easier to approach but also to keep focus on specific types of care. For the month(s) leading up to the trip the group, the Guatemalan doctors, and clinic staff will decide on the required equipment and resources needed to be prepared.
Once "on the ground" in the clinic, you will be expected to either perform care or advise local doctors performing care - depending on your plan with the clinic team and expertise.
What are the most common cases treated at the clinic?
In 2022 the clinic saw 14,520 patient visits which included:
- 2492 Diabetes
- 2222 High Blood Pressure
- 2222 High Blood Pressure
- 1256 Dental
- 1075 Respiratory Infection
- 1072 Musculoskeletal Disease
- 601 Prenatal
- (other mixed)
What fields of expertise are most needed?
In the early stages of the project, we're looking for additional support in dentistry. More info coming soon.
During trip planning we will send you all of the information you need to be prepared for your medical trip.
